Last week, on Friday June 26, the United Nations celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in San Francisco where Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared the Charter to “symbolize the hope and aspirations that we can bring the world as it is, a little closer to the world as it should be.”
Several high-level officials attended the ceremony, including; Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman and Democratic Leader of the United States House of Representatives; Jerry Brown, Governor of California; Edwin Lee, Mayor of San Francisco; and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzai.
The ceremony was broadcasted at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City where Samantha Power, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations spoke on commemorating the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Charter.
